“Governance” – not a word to get the pulse racing is it. 

However, every organisation needs some form of delivery governance controls to a greater or lesser degree (the alternative is delivery chaos), but so often we see governance and assurance functions either not working effectively or in some cases almost entirely absent. 
 

Whether an organisation has always lacked sufficient delivery controls, watered down the controls it once had in an attempt to be more flexible, or like many organisations embraced “agile” ways of working without truly understanding what Agile means, right sizing the governance and assurance framework is critical to successful change delivery. 
 

There is no magic off-the-shelf methodology that will seamlessly work, but there are some core principles that should be used to tailor governance and assurance to an organisation's needs: 
 

  

Get these principles right for an organisation and it will help ensure key investment and delivery decisions are taken by the right people at the right time, and that governance processes are a recognised value-add to the organisation.
