Right-sized Governance P3: Enterprise Resource Management | Hindsight is a wonderful thing

Written by Jonny Baber on

If only you’d know that the high priority project rushed through your delivery teams was actually going to chew up far more resources than you realised, take twice as long, and cost three times as much (and a little more due diligence on the Business Case would have shown you that it was never going to fully deliver on benefit expectation in the first place), would you have started it?

Or perhaps you committed to a delivery date on something assuming it was relatively simple, but mid-project realised you had a critical dependency on a highly constrained team that wasn’t available for months.

Overlooking

Sound familiar?

These common scenarios invariably lead to delivery roadmaps shaped by default – not design, often with “hero” projects draining key resources regardless of the relative value they bring to the organisation.

As we discussed in part 2 of our Right-sized Governance Series on demand management, it is vital that any new change demand is shaped and assessed in a common way across the enterprise to ensure that the right level of information is available for informed investment decisions early in the delivery lifecycle.

However, organisations also need an effective way of assessing deliverability in the context of their wider change demand portfolio – and this can often be a challenge to get right.

Perfect Balance
